THE card to own in our hobby is a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle rookie card. Mantle is one of the greatest players ever to step onto the baseball field. Leading his New York Yankees to seven World Series championships, Mantle made 20 All-Star teams, won 3 MVP awards, a triple crown (leading the league in batting average, home runs, and runs batted in), and slugged 536 career home runs. When Mantle hung up the spikes, only Babe Ruth and Willie Mays had more home runs than Mantle.

The story behind the card is amazing! In 1952, Topps released their cards in series. Example: cards 1-80 were released in series one. Cards numbered 81-250 were released in series two. The marketing idea was to keep kids buying packs all season long rather than completing the set early and not going into stores for packs later in the year. One big problem - by the time series six was released, kids were buying football cards and the baseball cards collected dust! Topps eventually dumped unsold series six cards into the Ocean. At the bottom of the Atlantic were many copies of card #311, Mickey Mantle.

Perhaps the all-around best player was Willie Mays. Mays could hit, hit for power, run with speed, and field with a gold glove. The Say Hey Kid made 24 All-Star teams, won two MVP awards, won 12 Gold Glove awards, and led the league in stolen bases four times as well as home runs four times!

The two cards you see above are the exact cards from this break. On the left is Mays, just 21 in 1952, wearing his Giants cap as he looks face on. Mantle on the right, was only 20 in 1952. Lumber in-hand, Mantle is looking off into the distance.

In total, there are 300 cards in the set break. This break contains all cards from 1-310 (less 1, 11, 12, 29, 33, 37, 55, 175, 191, 195, and 216) plus the #311 Mickey Mantle. Only 300 spots will be sold.
